Crude Back Over $100 to Begin Monday
U.S. stock futures are higher premarket as investors kick off a holiday-shortened week of trading and traders monitor moves in the oil and bond markets.
The moves come after Wall Street had another losing week, with the Dow Index ($DJI), Nasdaq-100 (NDX) and Russell 2000 (RUT) dipping into correction territory. The Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 (SPX) all posted their fifth straight weekly declines.
Stocks are higher this morning despite a rise in oil prices with crude back above $100 a barrel. Trump said overnight that Tehran had, “for the most part,” accepted a 15-point plan to end the U.S.-Iran war. He also said Iran agreed to led an additional 20 oil ships to cross the Strait of Hormuz.
With the conflict with Iran entering its fifth week, investors will continue to watch headlines out of the Middle East along with Jobs data this week.
Snapshot (as of 7 AM ET)
- Oil (/CL) – Oil prices are up 1.5% near $101.00 as Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis fired missiles at Israel and U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly said he wants to take Iran’s crude, deepening concerns over escalating risks to Middle East energy flows. His remarks come as the conflict between the U.S., Israel and Iran has entered its fifth week, with attacks spreading across the region, heightening risks to energy infrastructure and driving a sharp rally in crude prices.
- Gold (/GC) – Gold prices are up 1.5% near $4590 after rebounding from 4-month lows on Friday, while investors looked for signs of de-escalation in the Middle East conflict.
- Bitcoin (/BTC) – The Crypto Future is up 2.5% near 67,800 in premarket trading.
- VIX – The CBOE Volatility Index was up 13% on Friday and settled at 31.05 as stocks sold off. The VIX settled at its highest level in 11 months.
- U.S. Dollar (/DX) – The dollar is slightly higher at 100.1.
