Market Minute: The Start of a New Era

Last week’s rally has raised questions about some of the bearish technical patterns that have formed over the past two months. This week will be critical to observe whether the market can maintain its momentum. With significant events on the calendar, the bulls will need to capitalize on this opportunity before heading into the seasonally challenging periods at the end of January and the beginning of February.

On the U.S. front, economic events are relatively light, with initial jobless claims, flash services and manufacturing PMIs, and existing home sales leading the docket. Overseas, the Bank of Japan’s rate decision on Thursday evening and ECB President Christine Lagarde’s speech on Friday before the U.S. equity session will be key events. However, the primary driver for equities this week will be earnings reports.

The action begins Tuesday morning with earnings from 3M (MMM) and D.R. Horton (DHI). 3M saw intense selling pressure last quarter after reporting mix results. Meanwhile, for D.R. Horton, questions about the impact of mortgage rates on customer demand will take center stage. On Tuesday evening, Netflix (NFLX) will kick off earnings for the "Magnificent Seven" (Mag 7), making it the most closely watched announcement of the week. After Netflix's high-profile involvement in events like the historic Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match, the Christmas NFL games, and the Beyoncé halftime show, investors are eager to see if these efforts translated into heightened subscriber enthusiasm.

Finally, the most significant event of the week will be the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. The market is anticipating a flurry of executive orders on his first day, some of which could have direct implications for financial markets.

Be sure to tune in on Tuesday to our new show, Morning Movers, hosted by Diane King Hall, at 8 a.m. ET, where she’ll cover all the latest breaking news affecting the markets. Who knows—her first guest might dive into these executive orders and their market impact right at the top of the show. See you on Tuesday!
