Market Week in Review: Quotes You Missed as Tech Soars
The S&P 500 had another good week, with technology stocks providing uplift despite weak consumer sentiment and still-high oil prices.
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq each rose more than 1% on Friday. Oil prices were a bit higher Friday with headlines indicating sparring and negotiations continue in the fragile U.S.-Iran cease fire. June West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose $0.05 to settle at $94.86 per barrel, and July Brent crude, the global benchmark, was up $0.48 at $100.60.
U.S. consumer sentiment in May fell to an all-time low of 48.2 from April’s 49.8. But April jobs numbers were better than expected.
Tech names rallied, and the week produced some astonishing appreciation for Data Dog Inc (DDOG) and Akamai Technologies (AKAM), which were the top index performers with 5-day appreciation of 42% apiece. Micron Technology (MU) rose nearly 38%, and Fortinet Inc (FTNT), Sandisk Corp (SNDK), Davita Inc (DVA), and Super Micro Computer (SMCI) all rose more than 30%. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Intel Corp (INTC), and Dell Technologies (DELL) and Qualcomm Inc (QCOM) each rose more than 23%.
The biggest losers on the week were a mixed bag: Zoetis Inc (ZTS) down 27%, CDW Corp (CDW) down nearly 23%, Arista Networks Inc (ANET) down nearly 18%, and Motorola Solutions (MSI) down nearly 12%.

On the latest negotiations and tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with strikes exchanged Thursday, Mabrouk Chetouane, Head of Global Market Strategy at Natixis Investment Managers, talks with Diane King Hall. Some Natixis funds have focused on safe havens in the U.S. market amid Middle East tensions. Chetouane had this to say Friday:
“Everyone is clearly saying ... I'm not guilty and it's not my fault. And clearly, we are in this situation of lack of visibility. But what matters at the end of the day: it’s the market perception, the market reaction, it's quite measured ... we are pretty confident [the parties] will find a kind of agreement quite soon, because there is a need, an urgency, to find an agreement to control these pressures on energy prices. … China has started to get involved into the discussion because there is a need for China to see the Hormuz Strait liberated by the Iranian forces …." Stacker CEO Noah Greenberg, speaking to Sam Vadas, about how AI is impacting search, content, and brand visibility, and why fresh data and content are so important.
“What worked for [businesses] optimizing for LLMs three months ago is changing so frequently … The biggest mistake I see a lot of marketing teams and brands making right now is going after the same top-of-funnel searches, queries and content that worked really well on Google. … LLMs are not surfacing any third-party brands or citations [that] they have already scraped from the internet. … To create a GEO strategy to show up more in LLMs … think about queries … [and] new content.” See From SEO to AI: How Search Is Rapidly Evolving | Next Gen Investing| Schwab Network
Suzanne Porsky, an investment advisor and founder of Phoenix Financial Group, talks with Marley Kayden about how some of her female clients think. She also discusses the investing appeal of AI, energy/power infrastructure, and income/defensive strategies.
“Women are much more involved as we get ready for this massive wealth transfer, in this gender, of about $34 trillion. Women are not going with hype, but education and understanding. One sector I like is AI. They are not just looking at AI, they are looking at what is supporting AI infrastructure, cybersecurity. Without that grid, you cannot have success with AI.” See Suzanne Porske: A Market Built on Strategy, Not Hype | Trading 360| Schwab Network
