Markets head into the week of October 19-23 with a lighter U.S. economic calendar, putting even more attention on earnings.

The key question for investors will be whether corporate earnings can offset renewed inflation and interest-rate volatility, with tech results offering an important test of AI spending and valuations. Tuesday brings results from GE Aerospace (GE), General Motors (GM), RTX Corporation (RTX), and Netflix (NFLX). Wednesday will be the highlight for earnings this week. It features a particularly important technology lineup including Meta Platforms (META), Tesla (TSLA), IBM, Lam Research (LRCX), and Texas Instruments (TXN). Thursday adds Lockheed Martin (LMT), Comcast (CMCSA), and Western Digital (WDC), before American Express (AXP) and SLB report Friday.

On the economic calendar, housing starts and building permits arrive Tuesday, followed by weekly jobless claims Thursday. Friday’s S&P Global flash manufacturing and services PMIs and final University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading should provide a fresh look at business activity and consumer confidence. September CPI and PPI were hotter than expected, so this week’s data may shape expectations ahead of the Federal Reserve’s October 28 rate decision.
