2025 Open/Close Ratio for ETFs Jumps

Jillian DelSignore of Nasdaq looks under the hood on ETFs, examining the open/close ratio of funds. She notes that the ratio of opens to closures of ETFs jumped to 5.4 from 2.2 between 2023-2025. Innovation and newer, smaller players are part of the reason why funds are closing, and she considers it healthy for the industry. She discusses how active ETFs and ETF launches spiked after Covid and anticipates a “rash of closures.”
